Most of our efforts pertaining to this initiative involve spreading information and increasing access to family planning methods. Ultimately, this will lead to a decrease in the infant mortality rate (currently at 74 deaths per 1,000 births), the maternal mortality rate (about 520 deaths per 100,000 births, compared to just 14 maternal deaths per 100,000 births in the United States) and the child mortality rate ( more than 10 percent die before the age of 5).

Furthermore, because the typical Haitian woman will have five children in her lifetime, over 40% of the population is under 14 years old, creating a high dependency ratio. With their families unable to care for them, they often become "restavek", or poor children who work as house servants for urban families where many are physically and sexually abused.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Eighty percent of Haitians live under the poverty line.
